Christ - The Servant King

Excuse me, can you help me, please?” a voice called out on my right.

I stole a glance at her. A geeky girl was sitting hunched in a wheelchair over her lunch. I did not know her, but she was unmistakably calling out to me. I made my way over to her side and asked if I could do anything for her. I was about to help her, when a friend further ahead motioned to me.

I left her for a while to go to my friend, who advised me not to help her as she could be “quite a
handful”. Shocked as I was, I was left being uncertain and terrified. What could she possibly have
meant?

And so I grabbed my books, asked if she would be alright if I left her alone, and rushed off to class.

A classmate mockingly asked me about the incident when I entered the class, and I sheepishly
answered that I didn’t help her. At that very moment, I felt a wave of shamefulness washing over me as I recalled the episode.

What was I trying to portray as a Christian? Was that the right thing to do? What was a little trouble to myself when someone really needed it?

I was reminded of a bible passage in Matthew 25: 34-40 which reads:
"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
How often it is that we avoid going out of our way to help others because of our selfishness. However, I hope this serves as a reminder to all of us that as beacons of light for Christ, the best way to share our faith is through our lives. How true it is that the world would be a better place with less selfishness and more selflessness.
